Archive: Objects Around My House. Part 7.

Leave it to the Swiss:

I have this Swiss Army knife that was kind of passed down to me from my father. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever received from him:

This knife has been my father’s since before he was my age. He carried it with him at all times. I was about to say that I’m NOT very sentimental about “things”, but who am I kidding, I keep all these little objects that remind me of specific times or places or people. Nevertheless, certain objects hold a lot more sentiment, not because of any specific memories I hold to it, but because of all the things this object may have been a part of prior to my possession of it.

This knife carries one visible description of this point:

The “flaw” in this knife happened when my father was a cameraman in the 70’s. He was in the process of repairing a light on set. He was cutting the cable to the light, when someone who was unaware, plugged the cable in and electrocuted my father. This was where the current burnt the knife. How cool? What else has the knife been around for? or used for?

As of yet, the only character I have added to this knife is some river bank sand.

But I bet some of that sand will still be stuck in there forty years from now. And that’s kind of exciting.
