Not sure why I started thinking about Instant Runoff Voting today, but I’m getting real worked up about the idea at this moment, for some reason. Especially since I suffer from a crippling apathy towards “issues”.
The last decade of media-covered politics has successfully drained every ounce of damn that I give about any political issue or candidate. Anytime the conversation breaches, I find myself either arbitrarily developing an opinion on the spot for the sake of conversation, or completely tuning out. But I think this may actually be the first political issue I’ve cared about since I came down from my Obama high of ought-eight. And this isn’t even one of the “hard-hitting issues”.
Combining Instant Runoff Voting and a National Popular Vote makes so much dang since, it’s almost frustrating. The fact that you can currently be elected with a vast majority of the country NOT wanting you in office is so frustratingly backwards.
And I’m guilty of never having put two-seconds of thought into how voting works. I always thought in terms of positive votes, like picking a team captain in gym class. I never considered negative votes. But low and behold, all it takes is one drunken conversation by a campfire to have my mind blown and embarrassed by how simple it is, and to have me still thinking about it almost six months later: Candidate A gets 40%; candidate B gets 35%; candidate C gets 25%. So A wins. Made sense to me. But wait, 60% did NOT vote for that person??? (insert drunk-epiphany-moment here)
Anyway… if you ask me, seems like a simple fix.
And I apologize to anyone reading this and thinking, “Uh, this is sophomore, pre-requisite shit, dude.”
I went to art school.
