Nicest conductor on the Illinois Central:
I left on a freight train from New Orleans just before Christmas, 2004. I was going with a kid named Seth, who was also hoping to reach Illinois by Christmas. He had a lot of experience riding trains, but even he was worried about the cold as we got north.
When we got to Centralia, Illinois, we had been riding through the middle of the night and it was...
This is one of those sites that was obviously created by some interactive graphic designer, as I can’t tell what is going on or where it is taking me, but everything looks really cool along the way.
Take a little romp through NobodyHere.

Sunny day or cloudy day?:
So I have a bunch of old cameras. None of which holds an amazing story or is much to talk about, except for one thing that has always caught my attention.
A number of the cameras have very few manual settings, and of those, quite a few simply give the operator two options: Sunny Day or Cloudy Day. As these are the only two options that one should be concerning...

I don’t usually like comic strips. I don’t know why. Just the format, I guess. But I came across this one today where the guy uses old illustrations from victorian-era and makes a random, funny piece out of it:
There are tons of them and they’re a lot of fun. They’re called Wondermark.
Randomness...
Wow… awesome.

This artist, whose site shows her photos/drawings/writings, should really focus on the drawing. I really like her style, and it outshines her other endeavors.
Look at some of her drawings here.

In case you aren’t aware of Found Magazine…. I introduce Found Magazine. This is a magazine started by a guy who enjoys the weird things you find on the street/garbage/anywhere.
They have a “find of the day” and you can go back forever it seems, looking at awesome things people find. Go. Enjoy. You’ll never walk down the sidewalk the same way again.

Life lessons of Mr. Miyagi: I spent a small amount of time in Natchez, Mississippi. A historic, deep south town with a more infamous past than New Orleans. It was the most notorious home of riff-raff and debauchery in the world, in its day. I spent an interesting evening of drinking at the Under the Hill Saloon. Most of the night, I was enthralled and amazed by the bartender, a little old man with...

If you have any interest in tattoos, like I have lately, you might find this artist really cool:
His work is very geometrical and looks as though it was drawn-on with a marker, or ballpoint pen, even:
Lot of cool stuff to look at. I highly recommend it.

This guy that goes by the name Polaroid Kidd, takes these amazing polaroids and happens to be a tramp (freight train rider) that is friends with a lot of the kids I traveled with on the Mississippi River. I never met him, but some of his photos feature people I know.
Such as Allie:
I highly recommend a visit to his website. Be sure to look at the polaroids, then click on “riding dirty...

Another blog, if it’s to be called that, is this site that collects old album covers, usually of the bizarre or funny variety. The collection is extensive and makes me wish I could hear the music the accompanied some of these.
I highly recommend the nude category:
Oh! The music that must warrant such an image. My imagination goes wild.
Go to LP Cover Lover.

I came across this blog a while back that has an amazing collection of old, printed ephemera. It’s updated regularly and has tons of stuff in the archive. If you enjoy this kind of thing like I do, you’ll be able to spend a long time looking at all these prints.
Go here to see BibliOdyssey.

Daniel Boone’s Autograph:
While travelling down the Mississippi, we stopped our boats in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. A cool little, french colonial town just south of St. Louis.
This was where I met Daniel Boone.
I was drinking at a bar in town, with maybe four people in it. One of whom was celebrating a birthday with Jeiger shots. He generously bought a round for everyone, including myself...
Imitation is the highest form of flattery...
So I took this photo of Kevin Phillips when I was in Cannes:
I put it, among a lot of other photos, on this site called DeviantArt. At one point, this image was featured on the front page of the site and before I knew it, I was receiving hundreds of comments on, and thousands of views of this photo.
Well that slowly died down to normal, but recently I received a comment from this guy who was...

From the archives:
I went to San Diego and stayed in a hotel for a week, for work. Somehow, upon my return, I find this in my posessions. I assume it is a name tag from a hotel employee.
Curious, I began a little research… She exists on MySpace: leah; 26 years old; San Diego, CA; no picture; one friend: Tom; single; pisces; doesn’t smoke; doesn’t drink.
So I turn the...

This thing is pretty cool, mostly because the nerd side of me really wants to know what kind of programming goes into it.
Either way, it’s fun to watch and I recommend spending 2 minutes to enjoy it.

A commercial photographer I came across today: Lyndon Wade.
Wow. I usually lean towards more documentary type work, but this guy is now among the select few that make me wish I had followed a much different path.
I highly recommend looking through his entire portfolio here.
Made by my friends...
Speaking of web series, Ian has one in the oven that I’m expecting to see full episodes of any time now. There are two teasers up right now and I highly recommend watching them.

I’ve been enjoying this “web series” lately by Michael Cera (George Michael from Arrested Development). It’s simple, funny, and a good way to spend some time at work. I’m also really excited for the movie Super Bad.
Watch the shows here.

This Minneapolis based company/collective of artists pumps out some of the coolest posters I’ve seen. Their main clientele consists of bands, but they have a really cool art print section. Everything’s available for purchase and they’re all signed and numbered in limited editions. Really cool stuff.
I own one poster of theirs and one hand-printed “zine”. Go look at...

Thom first told me about this. I heard what he had said, but I didn’t imagine it quite so… thrilling.

I’m especially curious about the protocol regarding a man in drag.

This will be, as you may have guessed, work by my friends.
Bill Ross and Turner Ross are working on a documentary. In Ohio. I’m excited to see it. Here is a tiny tease:

This category will be, simply, stuff I made. For now, most of this will be old, but it will be my favorites. New work will come, in time.
This one is old, but still one of my favorites:
This was taken in Joshua Tree National Park, during a weekend we deemed ‘WineRock’. Never have I experienced such weird debauchery in a desert. period.

In the same vein as the previous post, this site has an amazing collection of awesome, old, nude photographs. This site keeps it pretty tame and classy, which I like. Later I’ll introduce you to the site with awesome, old, dirty nudes. Shockingly dirty for the period.
Enjoy Vintage Pulchritude.

This is my most favorite place to visit on the wide world web. I have told many people about it, and I just can’t get enough of it.
If you like old, random shit, like I do, you will love this site. I don’t know how much time this person spends at garage sales, but he/she has the most amazing collection of old photographs I’ve ever seen.
It’s called Square America. Dig...

I just learned how the RSS stuff works.
If you want this blog to automatically refresh on your Google homepage, or Yahoo home page, just click on the little “RSS” button on the top of the page and follow the instructions.

This is from a collection of artifacts left behind, in a long closed down, psychiatric hospital’s attic. These items were found in suitcases of former patients. You can look through a lot of the collection here, an exhibit titled, “The Lives They Left Behind”. I love this stuff.

Again, a tentative title for items I find in the news. Suggestions for Category titles are fully welcomed.
So… who has seen ‘Happy Gilmore’ as many times as I have? Then you might enjoy this from the AP:

Here is another place that I find myself revisiting often. They are two artists/designers from Paris. Their work honestly causes an even combination of excitement and jealousy.
Here’s a taste:
I highly recommend looking at all their work here.

This is the tentative title for places/sites/people that I’ve come across that I feel are worth looking into.
Today’s is a couple kids (I use the term ‘kids’ loosely) that create a short photo-comic strip. One makes the photos, the other makes the captions. It’s definitely worth your time to peruse their archive.
Here’s and example, but there are so many I...
Look Mom, I'm famous.
So, apart from “launching” a nifty blog today, I also, officially, became a “published photographer” with the release of the new issue of JPG Magazine.
Here is my page:
Lulu and Turner also turned up in the magazine via an ad featuring two photos shot by the great Rady:

Don't hassle me. I'm blogging.
Inspired by the actions of a few around me, I have decided that I, too, would like to swim in the bloggy ether of the blogosphere. Sure, I’ve dabbled here and there. But now I want to try and have a more organized, more interesting, and more frequently tended-to web log experience.
Inspired by the great Ian Pfaff and his nickname for me, I have named this “Smoke & a Coke”. I...
